No matter how you do it, unless everything you fetch is YENC encoded you're "wasting" 30% of your bandwidth, and your time. The biggest weakness is still lots and lots of wasted bandwidth. So, the order for me is always to get new headers and then start my downloads, to make certain my news data files don't get too unwieldy.Īgent 2.0 is supposed to be out "Real Soon Now", so that should resolve lots of longstanding issues. I also set it to purge downloaded bodies when I get new headers for a group. I purge/compact upon exit from the program, but only if I answer in the affirmative.

You can set purges depending upon times and such. You can also set certain groups to purge the message after you've downloaded. If the file you want is still available, you shouldn't have any problem getting it. Alternatively, you can just delete the entire dat file (and the similarly-named small file that goes with it), and re-download the headers for that group. If you delete the ones you've already saved, you can clear up some space and download a few more. You're right, Agent makes the dat file large enough to hold the saved attachments.
